FOOTBALL.
Cradley Town 1, Bromyard Town 0.
DESPITE another much-improved showing, a Mark Swann penalty in first-half injury-time left Bromyard Town with no reward for their efforts in Tuesday night’s West Midlands League Premier Division game at Cradley Town. There were encouraging signs, however, as Bromyard created a whole host of chances, and several players might well have found their way onto the scoresheet as a succession of shots from the visitors whistled past the home woodwork.
This was particularly in the second period when the visitors’ fast-running constantly tormented an overworked Cradley defence.
Mahal 2, Malvern Rangers 1.
FOR the first 10 minutes of this West Midlands League Division Two game, Rangers penned Mahal back into their own half with relentless pressure, yet only carved out one decent opportunity, a shot by Olly Endacott which went inches past the upright.
An underweight backpass by Rob Cullen gifted Mahal their opening goal as their number 10 nipped in and won the race for the ball.
Keeper Ian Hill tripped the striker, conceded a penalty which was converted by a defender 1-0.
Mahal doubled their lead as Malvern’s defence pushed forward allowing the number nine space to close in on the 18-yard box and he toe-poked the ball under Hill for a two-goal lead.
Rangers had plenty of opportunities to score themselves and were unlucky not to reduce Mahal’s lead when David Lawrence was upended some 20 yards out and Lee Hooper cracked a fierce free-kick against the upright.
Dave Reynolds slipped Endacott into space and from a tight angle Endacott forced a great save out of the home goalkeeper.
Minutes later Cullen laid the ball off for Hooper and the midfielder’s 25- yard shot was driven straight at the keeper. After the break, Malvern pressed hard and following a corner the ball was cleared as far as Cullen, who fired the ball straight back into the net, but was disappointed to see his effort ruled out for an earlier infringement.
In the next 22 minutes, Reynolds, Endacott and then Craig Humphries all had chances to score before Endacott was blatantly fouled inside the box and it was skipper Hooper who stepped up to the mark pulling one goal back. With six minutes left on the clock, Cullen’s long throw fell to Endacott and the striker managed to fire the ball over the crossbar from close- range.
The last chance came as Andy Fletcher put Endacott away on the right and his cross was met by Humphries who headed over.
